Glico Matcha Mobaccho

Matcha Mobaccho!

In the past couple years, I've seen a couple candies from Japan that come packaged in a coffee cup-like container. To my knowledge, both are essentially Pocky bits, and both come from Glico. The one I'm reviewing is Mobaccho, and the other (cuter) one is Walky Walky.

It seems like the whole point of the package design is to be cute, because even though this comes in a cup, it doesn't seem like a good idea to leave it in a car, ever. Also, the package came open in my lunch bag when I brought it to work.

Matcha Mobaccho!

Despite the packaging frustration, the Mobaccho smelled like good, if a bit mild, matcha and a hint of cookie. This was described as "matcha and crisp pretzel" but the pretzel really reminded me of animal crackers. This was good, but unfortunately, I could taste the pretzel more than I could taste matcha.

The coating was a decent matcha chocolate, but if I didn't suck the coating off, I could barely taste it. I would have liked a thicker coating or even a matcha-flavored cookie center. It was a decent snack, but a bit disappointing.

Kelly at Tasty Japan posted a review of strawberry Mobaccho, so be sure to check out what she thought.

I have no idea what I'm talking about here, and I've avoided these sweets in a cup things, but I wonder if they put them in cups because they're tiny and they expect you to "drink" them rather than pick them up with your fingers. That is, dip the cup into your mouth and pour them in.

I always feel guilty for buying these types of things because the packaging seems more wasteful. I'm probably fooling myself though! All of the packaging in Japan is pretty wasteful.

I actually ate mine by the handful and got more of a flavour hit that way so I think what Orchid is saying is essentially what they want you to do, pour it in your mouth like a guts.

Yes, I think your idea of having a matcha flavoured biscuit would have boosted it. I think they need to be abit more original in their thinking.

Great review :) And thanks for the link :)

Orchid - You're probably right about pouring it into your mouth. And Japan is definitely the land of overpackaging. As long as it's pretty, it's okay in Japan.

Kelly - I wish they had really gone for it with the matcha flavor. My husband thought it was enough matcha, though, so maybe they wanted to please more people. Thanks!
